Project Features:
- The Mobil Altona-Somerton and Somerton-Tullamarine Pipelines
were constructed in the 1970s to carry aviation fuel from
the Altona refinery to Tullamarine airport, a total distance
of 44km. No as-built plans were completed at the time of construction
and maintenance crews were finding the original design plans
increasingly difficult to interpret with changes in the urban
environment.
- Tomkinson, in conjunction with Marden Corrosion Services developed
a scheme for cost effectively tracing and mapping the pipeline
and recording property ownership
details of the parcels traversed.
- Pipeline traces were surveyed at 25m intervals using high accuracy
GPS instruments. The surveyed points were then mapped against
a background of ortho rectified aerial photography and the
Victorian digital cadastre to show the relationship between
the pipeline, title boundaries and surface features.
- Title searches of affected properties were undertaken and the
information gained was collated into a property ownership
database, cross-referenced against the route mapping. Additional
title definition surveys were also undertaken on selected
properties where required.
